Quatro vezes o seu nome \u00e9 registrado nas <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/bible\">Escrituras<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(1) <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/bible\/dan010.htm#vrs13\">Daniel 10:13 sqq.<\/a><\/em>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/06330a.htm\">Gabriel<\/a> diz para <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/04620a.htm\">Daniel<\/a>, quando ele pede a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/06608a.htm\">Deus<\/a> que permita aos <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/08399a.htm\">judeus<\/a> voltarem para <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/08344a.htm\">Jerusal\u00e9m<\/a>: &#8220;O anjo [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/05140a.htm\">D.V.<\/a> pr\u00edncipe] do <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/11712a.htm\">reino dos Persas<\/a> resistiu-me . . . por\u00e9m Miguel, um dos principais chefes veio em meu socorro . . . contra esses advers\u00e1rios n\u00e3o h\u00e1 ningu\u00e9m que me defenda a n\u00e3o ser Miguel, vosso chefe.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(2) <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/bible\/dan012.htm\">Daniel 12<\/a><\/em>, o <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/01476d.htm\">Anjo<\/a> falando do <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/08552a.htm\">fim do mundo<\/a> e do <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/01559a.htm\">Anticristo<\/a> diz: &#8220;Naquele tempo surgir\u00e1 Miguel, o grande chefe, o protetor dos filhos do seu povo.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(3) <em>Na <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/bible\/jud001.htm\">Ep\u00edstola Cat\u00f3lica de S\u00e3o Judas<\/a>:<\/em> &#8220;Ora, quando o arcanjo Miguel discutia com o <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/04764a.htm\">dem\u00f4nio<\/a> e lhe disputava o corpo de <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/10596a.htm\">Mois\u00e9s<\/a>&#8220;, etc. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/08542b.htm\">S. Miguel ocultou o <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/14773b.htm\">t\u00famulo<\/a> de <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/10596a.htm\">Mois\u00e9s<\/a>; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/04764a.htm\">Satan\u00e1s<\/a>, no entanto, revelando-o, tentou seduzir o <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/08399a.htm\">povo judeu<\/a> para o <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/14004b.htm\">pecado<\/a> de adora\u00e7\u00e3o do her\u00f3i. Jo\u00e3o<\/a> fala do grande conflito no final dos <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/14726a.htm\">tempos<\/a>, que reflete tamb\u00e9m a batalha do <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/07170a.htm\">c\u00e9u<\/a> no in\u00edcio dos <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/14726a.htm\">tempos<\/a>. De acordo com os <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/06001a.htm\">Padres<\/a> h\u00e1 muitas vezes d\u00favidas sobre S. Miguel nas <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/bible\">Escrituras<\/a> onde o seu nome n\u00e3o \u00e9 mencionado. Eles dizem que ele era o <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/03646c.htm\">querubim<\/a> que guardava o port\u00e3o do <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/14519a.htm\">para\u00edso<\/a>, &#8220;para guardar o caminho da \u00e1rvore da vida&#8221; (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/bible\/gen003.htm#vrs24\">G<\/a>\u00eanesis 3:24), o <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/01476d.htm\">anjo<\/a> atrav\u00e9s do qual <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/06608a.htm\">Deus<\/a> publicou o <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/04664a.htm\">Dec\u00e1logo<\/a> ao seu <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/08193a.htm\">povo escolhido<\/a>, o <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/01476d.htm\">anjo<\/a> que ficou no caminho contra <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/02214b.htm\">Bala\u00e3o<\/a> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/bible\/num022.htm#vrs22\">N<\/a>\u00fameros 22:22 sqq.), o <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/01476d.htm\">anjo<\/a> que exterminou o ex\u00e9rcito de Senaquerib (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/bible\/2ki019.htm#vrs35\">2 <\/a>Reis 19:35).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Seguindo estas passagens das <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/bible\">Escrituras<\/a>, a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/15006b.htm\">tradi\u00e7\u00e3o crist\u00e3<\/a> confere a S. Miguel quatro of\u00edcios:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Lutar contra <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/04764a.htm\">Satan\u00e1s<\/a>.<\/li><li>Resgatar as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/14153a.htm\">almas<\/a> dos <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/05769a.htm\">fi\u00e9is<\/a> do poder do <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/04764a.htm\">inimigo<\/a>, especialmente na hora da morte.<\/li><li>Ser o campe\u00e3o do povo de <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/06608a.htm\">Deus<\/a>, os <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/08399a.htm\">judeus<\/a> na <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/10582c.htm\">Lei Antiga<\/a>, os <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/03712a.htm\">crist\u00e3os<\/a> no <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/14530a.htm\">Novo Testamento<\/a>; por isso ele foi o <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/11562a.htm\">padroeiro<\/a> da <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/03744a.htm\">Igreja<\/a> e das <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/10304d.htm\">ordens dos cavaleiros<\/a> durante a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/10285c.htm\">Idade M\u00e9dia<\/a>.<\/li><li>Convocar pra fora da terra e levar as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/14153a.htm\">almas<\/a> dos <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/09580c.htm\">homens<\/a> ao <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/08550a.htm\">julgamento<\/a> (&#8220;<em>signifer S. Michael repraesentet eas in lucam sanctam<\/em>&#8220;, Offert. Miss Defunct. &#8220;<em>Constituit eum principem super animas suscipiendas<\/em>&#8220;, Antiph. off. Miguel sobre todos os <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/01476d.htm\">anjos<\/a>; eles dizem que ele \u00e9 chamado &#8220;arcanjo&#8221; porque ele \u00e9 o pr\u00edncipe dos outros <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/01476d.htm\">anjos<\/a>; outros (cf. P. Boaventura, op. cit.) acreditavam que ele \u00e9 o pr\u00edncipe dos <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/13725b.htm\">serafins<\/a>, a primeira das nove ordens <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/01476d.htm\">ang\u00e9licas<\/a>. Mas, de acordo com <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/14663b.htm\">S. Tom\u00e1s<\/a> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/summa\/1113.htm#article3\">Summa Ia.113.3<\/a>) ele \u00e9 o pr\u00edncipe do \u00faltimo e mais baixo coro, os <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/01476d.htm\">anjos<\/a>. A <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/13155a.htm\">Liturgia Romana<\/a> parece seguir os <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/06001a.htm\">Padres<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/05230a.htm\">Gregos<\/a>; ela o chama &#8220;<em>Princeps militiae coelestis quem honorificant angelorum cives<\/em>&#8220;. O <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/07595a.htm\">hino<\/a> do <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/02768b.htm\">Brevi\u00e1rio<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/10611a.htm\">Mo\u00e7\u00e1rabe<\/a> situa S. Miguel at\u00e9 mesmo acima dos Vinte e Quatro Anci\u00e3os. A <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/06774a.htm\">Liturgia Grega<\/a> nomeia-o <em>Archistrategos<\/em>, &#8220;alto general&#8221; (cf. Menaea, 8 de nov. e 6 de set.).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"veneracao\">Venera\u00e7\u00e3o<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Seria natural para S. Miguel, o campe\u00e3o do <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/08399a.htm\">povo judeu<\/a>, ser o campe\u00e3o tamb\u00e9m dos <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/03712a.htm\">crist\u00e3os<\/a>, concedendo a vit\u00f3ria na <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/15546c.htm\">guerra<\/a> aos seus clientes. Os primeiros <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/03712a.htm\">crist\u00e3os<\/a>, no entanto, consideravam alguns dos <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/09736b.htm\">m\u00e1rtires<\/a> como seus patronos militares: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/06453a.htm\">S. Jorge<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/14573a.htm\">S. Teodoro<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/04706b.htm\">S. Dem\u00e9trio<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/13728a.htm\">S. S\u00e9rgio<\/a>, S. Proc\u00f3pio, S. Merc\u00fario, etc.; mas para S. Miguel eles deram o cuidado dos seus doentes. No lugar onde ele foi primeiramente <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/05188b.htm\">venerado<\/a>, na Fr\u00edgia, o seu prest\u00edgio como m\u00e9dico <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/01476d.htm\">ang\u00e9lico<\/a> ofuscou sua interposi\u00e7\u00e3o em assuntos militares. Esse foi desde os tempos primitivos o centro do <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/15073a.htm\">verdadeiro<\/a> culto dos <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/01476d.htm\">santos anjos<\/a>, particularmente de S. Miguel. A <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/15006b.htm\">Tradi\u00e7\u00e3o<\/a> relata que S. Miguel nos primeiros s\u00e9culos fez uma fonte medicinal jorrar em Chairotopa pr\u00f3ximo a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/04131a.htm\">Colossas<\/a>, onde todos os doentes que se banhavam, invocando a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/15047a.htm\">Sant\u00edssima Trindade<\/a> e S. Miguel, ficavam curados.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ainda mais famosas s\u00e3o as fontes que se diz S. Miguel ter extra\u00eddo da rocha em <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/04131a.htm\">Colossas<\/a> (Chonae, a atual Conas, no Rio Lico). Os <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/11388a.htm\">pag\u00e3os<\/a> desviaram um afluente contra o santu\u00e1rio de S. Miguel para destru\u00ed-lo, mas o arcanjo dividiu a rocha com um rel\u00e2mpago para dar um novo leito ao afluente e santificou para sempre as \u00e1guas que vem do G\u00f3rdio. Os <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/05230a.htm\">gregos<\/a> alegam que esta <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/15477a.htm\">apari\u00e7\u00e3o<\/a> aconteceu por volta de meados do primeiro s\u00e9culo e celebram uma <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/06021b.htm\">festa<\/a> em comemora\u00e7\u00e3o a ela em 6 de setembro (Analecta Bolland., VIII, 285-328). Tamb\u00e9m em P\u00edtia na Bit\u00ednia e por toda a parte na <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/01782a.htm\">\u00c1sia<\/a> as fontes termais fora <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/04673a.htm\">dedicadas<\/a> a S. Miguel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Em Constantinopla igualmente, S. Miguel era tido como o grande m\u00e9dico celestial. Seu principal santu\u00e1rio, o Michaelion (n.d.t.: tamb\u00e9m conhecido como \u201cMigu\u00e9lio\u201d), ficava em Sost\u00eanio, cerca de cinquenta milhas ao sul de Constantinopla; conta-se que l\u00e1 o arcanjo teria <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/15477a.htm\">aparecido<\/a> ao <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/04295c.htm\">Imperador Constantino<\/a>. Os doentes dormiam nesta <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/03041a.htm\">igreja<\/a> \u00e0 noite para esperara uma <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/15477a.htm\">manifesta\u00e7\u00e3o<\/a> de S. Miguel; sua <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/06021b.htm\">festa<\/a> era observada l\u00e1 em 9 de junho. Outra famosa <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/03041a.htm\">igreja<\/a> ficava dentro dos muros da cidade, nos banhos termais do Imperador Arcadius; l\u00e1 as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/14383a.htm\">sinaxes<\/a> do arcanjo eram celebradas em 8 de novembro. Sua <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/06021b.htm\">festa<\/a> se espalhou por toda a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/05230a.htm\">Igreja Grega<\/a>, e as igrejas <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/14417a.htm\">S\u00edria<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/01736b.htm\">Arm\u00eania<\/a>, e <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/01300b.htm\">Copta<\/a> tamb\u00e9m a adotaram; \u00e9 agora a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/06021b.htm\">festa<\/a> principal de S. Miguel no <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/05230a.htm\">Oriente<\/a>. Pode ter se originado na Fr\u00edgia, mas a sua esta\u00e7\u00e3o em Constantinopla era nas Termas de Arcadius (Martinow, &#8220;Annus Graeco-slavicus&#8221;, 8 nov.). Outras <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/06021b.htm\">festas<\/a> de S. Miguel em Constantinopla foram: 27 de outubro, na igreja de &#8220;Promotu&#8221;; 18 de junho, na Igreja de S. J\u00falio no F\u00f3rum; e 10 de dezembro, em Athaea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Os <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/01300b.htm\">crist\u00e3os do Egito<\/a> colocaram o seu rio que d\u00e1 a vida, o Nilo, sob a prote\u00e7\u00e3o de S. Miguel; eles adotaram a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/06021b.htm\">festa<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/05230a.htm\">grega<\/a> e a guardam em 12 de novembro; no dia doze de cada m\u00eas eles celebram uma comemora\u00e7\u00e3o especial do arcanjo, mas em 12 de junho, quando o n\u00edvel do rio come\u00e7a a subir, eles consideram como um <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/06021b.htm\">feriado<\/a> de <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/11189a.htm\">preceito<\/a> da <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/06021b.htm\">festa<\/a> de S.
